KAY_2015TGHOMETOWN: Boulder

ABOUT: I can ride the same trail 20 times a summer. It’s always different. Or it’s the same and comfortingly familiar. Or I ride it in the winter and the rocks have been swallowed up by the snow and it’s a whole new ball game. You cannot ride a bike and not smile. I think it’s impossible. I see runners out on the trails and I try to look serious, like I’m working really hard, getting in my intervals or something. Maybe me and the runner will connect in the pain of our work out. Except I’d be full of deceit. Even if I’m trying to bust out a personal best on my local trail and my legs are on fire on the climb, I can’t stop the smile when I start rolling downhill, wind cooling me down.

That’s why I ride. It’s always fun even when it’s hard. It brings me into the moment, fully present. It’s challenging, even after 20 years. I know I won’t stop for another 20…..

MOST MEMORABLE NON RACE BIKE MOMENT: My first White Rim in a day trip…. Just leave me here by the side of the road. I promise I’ll keep pedaling….
